Ballerina girls

I had a fantastic day on Saturday - five ballerina girl shoots in the studio - with girls ranging from 3 to 17 years old. It taught me a thing or two about ballet and I loved every minute. The girls and their parents all enjoyed themselves too, which is always great for me to see.

Here are a few examples of what I was up to...I am making a full slideshow of the day but I may keep it until the mums and dads have seen all of the images first.

Anyway, enjoy. Well, I have been quiet lately but I have been working away...busy busy (and plotting lots too, but that's to tell you about on another day).

As well as fielding some NEOS calls (registration deadline is today so there were a few panicky calls) I have been taking photographs both in the studio and as part of a personal project....which will form the basis of my own NEOS exhibition in September. But then again, I do love the images from a shoot I did on Thursday - I could exhibit them! Here's a sneaky peek for Mum and Dad...

Spring Fayre for Torphins Playgroup coming up

I'm looking forward to Sat 26th March when I will be at the Spring Fayre organised by Torphins Playgroup. The fayre will be from 2pm-4pm at the Learney Hall and there will be lots of stalls including cakes, face painting, nails and fun stuff.

I will have a stand where you can see my latest products and portfolio and there
will be a chance to win a children's portrait session in a free to enter prize draw.

Photographs of the month - February

As we headed into another month things were certainly picking up for 2011 in the studio. I've had families, gorgeous kids and fashion shoots, all using different backgrounds and different sytles. I've been across to Port Elphinstone to shoot a shop interior and I have been happily editing in my new studio.

I've been down to Focus On Imaging - a huge photography trade event at the NEC where I had a look at all the latest in framing/albums and kit - can't wait to get some exciting new products and studio backgrounds.

I got a Bronze award for the Little Katie photograph I entered into the children's portraiture competition with the SWPP...going to enter another one in March so watch this space!

Launching Edge Parties...

This weekend, as well as putting the finishing touches to the NEW STUDIO I will be lauching Edge Parties.
So get a group of friends together at your place, open a bottle or two and I will show you some of the fantastic products and gifts that you can get from Edge Photography.

There's a generous commission in it for the host based on any sale made as a result of bookings or gifts bought at the party. That can go towards their own photoshoot or you could just claim a big fat cheque. It's a fab way for charities to fundraise too.

It is that time again!
Yes, you guessed it...PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MONTH... were you expecting them?
Eeek, well, the thing is, I don't have any portraits!
I have been working but I don't have any portraits to share with you. Disappointed? Well actually I do have some, but now I've got your attention....there is an important point to make. Oh dear, I've gone all serious!
Doing what I do, and I mostly shoot children, I must respect my client's desires when it comes to publishing images of their children on my blog/facebook pages.
I ask everyone whose photos I want to use if I can show them off in my portfolios. That's really important to me. The answers are always interesting.
Some people shrug and say "whatever" and I wonder if they are aware of internet security when it comes to posting children's photos.
Some people love the idea of seeing their professional photographs on-line, they use them as their facebook profiles and kindly link through to my webpages (www.suzanneedge.co.uk). I feel great that they want to share them, I get a fuzzy warm feeling when I see someone using my photographs.
Other Mums and Dads aren't so sure, and with concerns about safety they usually say they'd rather I didn't post their images.
I watermark images I use, or I use a protected flash gallery but I understand no images posted on-line are secure. The truth is, if somebody wants a photograph, for whatever reason, they will take it. I have photographs of my own children on there, but that's a considered choice I make.
Have a think about your photographs and the information you post online about yourself. I'm a big fan of social media and networking, a lot of my clients see my work through these pages and I appreciate it when clients let me use their images in my portfolios but I wouldn't do it if they said no. If you've paid for some family photographs, whoever the photographer, make sure they know how you feel about it and ask their advice, they should know their subject!

Ready, Set.....GO!

After a few weeks R&R it's about time to get Edge Photography moving again. What an amazing time we had on the run up to Christmas with lots of family photoshoots and my favourite of all, the Lumphanan Toddlers. They filled a whole day in the studio, were a fantastic giggle and did well to fundraise for their group.

Things are taking off again for 2011.

An auction will be held in aid of CLAN in Torphins next month and I have donated an "auction lot" of a family sitting with a framed 10x8 print.
There's a chance to win too as I've also donated a raffle prize of a photoshoot to the Torphins Playgroup to be raffled during an upcoming fundraising Ceilidh.
Coming up I've got a children's party to shoot and later in the year there's more playgroup days and hopefully a collaboration with another Scottish photographer at a major Scottish event (tease tease, more to come!).
Then there's NEOS to think about (eek) - but long before that there'll be a trip to Focus on Imaging - Europe's biggest imaging show - to check out the very latest in the photography world and search out the newest trends in printing and framing etc.
I've also just been in talks about a calander......but I'll keep that under my hat for now.

I am looking to be involved with more business clients this year, creating commercial images for websites and literature/brochures. I will be updating my website soon to that end. If in the meantime you wish to discuss photography for your business then please get in touch.

7 Ways to get the best out of your family portrait sitting.

So you've probably had your family photoshoot for Christmas? Did you like the shots? Did you persuade Dad to smile? Did Dad wear his Superman T-shirt? Did you get what you wanted? I always like to hear feedback from customers and here's a round up of what's been said to me recently.
Some hints and tips for making the most of your family shoot...

1. Does your photographer's style match up with yours?
Your photographer's website will show their best and impessive work but does it match what you want to put on your wall or send to Granny? There's a trend for contemporary "lifestyle" images - but would you rather have little Johnny looking at the camera or catch the back of his head? It's up to you, so make sure your photographer does what you'd like them to do!

2. Do you want some choice?
Some photographers will pick the best couple of images and tell you that's your lot. Others will give you lots of choice. The most technically perfect, amazing shot by your favourite photographer might not have caught that special something in your child's expression and sometimes only you can see that. More choice will make you happier and you'll get what you want.

3. Don't ask to see what's on the back of the camera.
There are a few reasons for this. What you see on the screen is not what you'll get. Editing goes on with digital cameras just like in the darkroom (when you didn't see any shots before developing). You just can't tell from what's on the screen what you're going to get - for instance a great shot on the very small LCD may not be sharp when "developed".
If you've got kids around, they will want to see the camera after EVERY shot, which can be very disruptive. For these reasons a lot of photographers won't show you so don't set up for embarrassment - just be patient!

4. What you wear is important. BIG bright Logos on T-shirts are always distracting in a photograph. Believe it or not, I find Dads are the worst for doing this!
Also black clothes on white background will not be flattering (can make you look like you ate all the mince pies). If you have gone to all the trouble of dressing the kids in your favourite outfits let the photographer know - you don't just want to be a bunch of head shots and close-ups!
We've had a splattering a chicken pox here lately. One mum dressed her kids in fun dress-up outfits that covered their scars, another proudly showed them off (no-photoshopping-please!). It's up to you.

5. Little children don't always perform. They can seem very happy then tighten up when they see the lights and backgrounds. Trying to chat about their favourite children's TV character sometimes works. Threating them with no sweeties just upsets them. Once a child is crying, their photographs will look puffy eyed and you won't like them. Portrait sessions are not weddings, they can be done again. Try not to pressure the little ones, sometimes they just won't join in.

6. Ask your photographer about different ways to display your images. There's more out there than traditional frames. Edge photography sells a big range of desk top and wall portrait frames in traditional wood and contemporary acrylics. Think where your pictures will be going, measure the wall space before your photo veiwing.

7. When you hang your photographs, let everyone know who took them and let them know about all the helpful advice you got from Edge Photography on how to make the most of your photoshoot!

Hope this helps? Remember above all, they are your pictures! It always amazes me when people say "whatever you think, you're the photographer" - I prefer to discuss what you want and endeavor to make it happen.

It really has been a couple of crazy weeks. The families who came for the Lumphanan Toddler Group Photos were all stars, thankyou for booking and coming along. Some of the little ones were a challenge (and some of the bigger ones too!) but I'm glad we did well in getting them in front of the camera in most cases!

I will keep this brief - here a few sneaky peek photos from the group sessions - the proof cards are being developed as I type and we've just got one more shoot (and a half) to go.

Photos of the month - October.

It's that time of the month again - photos of the month I mean. October was a difficult month and a few photoshoots had to be moved to November - that just means we've got some really exciting shoots coming up.

So, back in October there were some cracking shoots. On the last day of the month there were 26 families through the door for a local toddler group - wow, what a day! Well, those photos are being processed just now (well I'm having a wee lunch break interlude to write this just now but you know what I mean) and they will be going out very soon to be sent as Christmas pressies to relatives around the world.

In the meantime - here's my photos of the month, some great kids under studio lights and my not so helpful daughter who not only insisted on the Hull City shirt but who wouldn't take my Christmas card shoot seriously...your own kids are always the worst!

Now Suzanne Edge Photo is available in England too! I came down to Northampton to take some photos of these two lovely kids, who were really up for it and great little posers, what stars!

I had a really fun time on Saturday taking a local family's photographs. I went over to their house and set up my portable studio in their living room, which worked really well because the kids were relaxed and quite happy. We played hide and seek around the pop-up background and hid from the imaginary rain under my light reflectors....then I played with the kids! The kids did so well and put up with a lot. We tried to stay away from the average posed family shot, but it's not as easy as you might think! Oh, did I mention they had won the shoot having entered the prize draw at the Torphins Gala in August.

I get a lot of comments just now about how people are wanting "something different". I suspect that means that they want something beyond the school photograph we all had as a kid. But hey, I actually quite like those funny shots of me and my two older brothers pushed together for the annual picture for grannie - seriously, I do, I think I like them because my parents had them done and I had them and now my own children have them.
They definitely have a place and I will take them and hang them and put them in the post to Aunty Mary in Australia (promise) - but if you do want something a bit different - something special, unique and an heirloom to hang on the wall and pass on through the generations then take a look at some of the portraits I am exhibiting currently at the Camera Club exhibition at Finzean Church.

Introducing my Emotions collection.

I can work with you to create a unique and personal work of art with layers of texture and interest that say something about the character in the image. I will produce these fine art prints with beautiful frames for your home with your input, because it's all about what you want to hang on your wall and be proud to show off.

This was shot with window light, with no flashes to disturb her and a lot of quiet and peace to allow Charlie to enjoy her teddy. Sometimes being playful and jumping around with children can be counter-productive. Instead a quiet moment allowed her to play with her precious toy. "Me & My Teddy" is on show at the OPEN SHUTTERS exhibition this week.

It matters to the final image what your child wears to the photoshoot, we'll talk about that before hand.
We can also discuss how you want your image presented and framed to help it fit perfectly in to your surroundings.

Three photographs make up this playful image where she was asked to dance for me on a white backgound and she became almost bashful. Yellow flowers and a rusty texture make up this unique work of art which hangs in a large white frame in pride of place.

FIVE things to do in the NE Scotland this week.

Get out visiting and be proactive this week in Aberdeenshire...see you there...

1. Deeside Camera Club's OPEN SHUTTERS exhibition starts on Saturday and runs until 19th September at Finzean Church. The camera club are showing a fabulous mixture of photographs of all genres, mounted prints can be bought from the exhibition and commisions and orders can be made.

2. Every Wednesday between 2 and 4pm Deeside Vegetables will be at Platform 22 selling their fresh, home grown, delicious seasonal vegetables. There's lots in season at the moment. You can also order a veg box ~ small box for £12 and large £17

3. GO and visit Wyness Hall, Jackson Street, Inverurie from Saturday 11th September
Where Gabrielle Reith, Philip Thompson and others will be holding their multi-media exhibition. "Small Stories" is the home of the art and design of Gabrielle Reith. Gabrielle is inspired by the natural world and the tradition of story telling. Gabrielle has a special interest in Scottish stories and dialects‚ with a young daughter at home‚ there is always inspiration from story telling!

4. Scottish Food and Drink fortnight is being celebrated at Deeside Activity Park: Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight started on Saturday 4th - 19th September. Watch out for our Scottish Specials, our tastings and our supplier hamper prize draw. Also to end the fortnight one of Ken's wonderful Cairnton Aberdeen Angus Steak Celebration Evenings. I can't quite believe how much is in the pipeline for Suzanne Edge Photo just now. The Torphins Gala was a huge success and the results are taking the children's portrait business exactly where I want it to go.
Two names were pulled from a hat and the lucky winners will get a FREE sitting, FREE prints and some amazing offers on wall art and session CDs....well done, I will publish the names shortly.

I've got an amazing new project involving developing some really old films and creating coffee table books. There's the wedding party (don't get excited I'm not doing weddings) there's an article in the pipeline and some editorial work. I've got a fashion shoot, make that two fashion shoots, another shoot will take us to a railway station and then to a castle ruin. I've an AV project in mind.
I don't think I will be in bed early tonight - I'm editing two party shoots.
Then of course there's NEOS - I'm exhibiting as part of the Deeside Camera Club and I'm going to take photographs at other exhibitions.....I'm sure I've missed something!

Suzanne Edge Photo will be at the Torphins Gala!
In the North East, panic appears to have set in. NEOS seems to bring out the panic in everyone, counting down to that magical day when their very best work will be on show when they open their studios. I suppose everyone wants to do the best they can but hey, are you one of those people that works best under pressure? My phone keeps ringing about it all, but I will have to think about it after Saturday's Torphins Gala. I am putting together a wee stand to show gala visitors my portraiture and giving them the chance to book a sitting with a special gala price of just £10 with some amazing gala prices on prints and wall art. There's a chance to win a free sitting too. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and letting them know I am now in Torphins.
I'm also really looking forward to doing some Autumn Leaves portraits - all welly boots, funky scarves and kicking the leaves - the colours always look great on a big wall canvas.

Fun with the French...

How much fun am I having just now? The town of Aboyne, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was twinned this week with the town of Martignas-sur-Jalle, France. A contingent of representatives from the town of Martignas spent the week here in Royal Deeside enjoying the local hospitality, it was a privilege to meet such a lovely group of people. My french is hhhmmm, sort-of ok but I was a bit shy to use it! I spent a day with the group, we went to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery, (I tried some whisky) we had a picnic at Braemar (I tried some red wine) and we sipped Cock-of-the-North and ate cup-cakes on the lawn at Aboyne Castle with the Marquis of Huntly and his wife....not a bad day of work for a photographer. Then I spent an evening capturing the ceremony in the dark, hot Aboyne theatre, first with flash and then playing about with huge ISO numbers and tiny f numbers – once again proving I should have a camera that’s a lot less noisy – but hey, c’est la vie. Here’s a couple of shots from the week, enjoy.

I need some space...

In and out of the studio(space) things are getting a bit busy. I am looking for a suitable space to set up permanant studio and gallery for my wall and desktop products. If you have any ideas (and you are thinking about the Torphins area) then feel free to give me a shout.
Speaking of Torphins I have confirmed that I will have a stall at the Torphins Gala on 21st August 2010 - I'm looking forward to getting out there and speaking to everyone. Galagoers will have the chance to sign up for a kids photo session for a special Gala price of just £10. ALSO there's a chance to win a free session just by answering a few market research questions for me - simple!

Last week a fellow photographer had a fantastic write up in the local press - a feature on her business etc. Best of luck to her, she's an amazing photographer and will go very far. I was a bit gutted to be honest - I'm working hard to be where she is. Then I got a couple of messages yest and found that I had a wee bit of recognition too - just a little, but it's a start. We've all got to start somewhere eh?

The new Mrs Stewart

Congratulations to the new Dr and Mrs Stewart. The bride was such a good sport and thanks to her for coming all the way from Edinburgh for a shoot at Cambus O'May. The suspension bridge there is a beautiful spot, so beautiful we couldn't expect to have it to ourselves on such a nice day. Our audience of sightseers just made it all the more funny. It really helps when you're having fun - time really does fly. I take massive joy in making images and learning each day how I can do it better but to spend an afternoon having a giggle with a friend - that was even better. Here are a selection of shots to keep them amused till I get a CD in the post.

Footstars Fun was so fast!

It's been a wee while since I spent the day with Gwen and the Footstars but it was so much fun I wanted to let you know about it. Footstars are a kids football coaching group in Aberdeenshire. The coaches are just fabulous with the children, I love seeing my own little Footstar develop. A coaching session to show off their skills, the amazing football kids and the sponsorship of golfer Paul Lawrie was held at Culter Sports Centre and I went along to record some images for the Footstars promotional material and website.
Footstars can be found for boys and girls at different venues around the City and Shire 7 days a week - more details at www.footstars.co.uk

Here are some of the images. For the photographers out there these were taken with a Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm f5.6 lens. Shooting in a gym hall is very challenging - keeping noise levels down whilst pushing the ISO was a hard balance and the pace of the shoot was wow, fast: not much time to think and react. Maybe a faster lens would help but I think maybe if someone wants to buy me a Nikon D3s for my birthday, that's cool too. Feel free to ask questions about the shoot and if you want to follow the blog or share me with your facebook friends, that would be great too - spread the word!

I had a huge amount of fun the other day trying all sorts of styles with these guys - great models and such a laugh chasing them round the studio set. This is just a first sneaky peek at the images. Can't wait to finish them all off and show the kids and their mum and dad....more images to follow.

Some shots for Project Slogan

I visited Project Slogan in Aberdeen yesterday. The gallery support contemporary artists by holding exhibitions, projects and events. Now they open their doors during the week for a coffee, chat or to read their zines. It's a "pay what you like" cafe - funded by arts related funding bodies they are not-for-profit, which is really interesting....I suspect they will make a little more than the suggested price on the menus but then it would be easy to spend a whole afternoon checking out the zines and relaxing at the gallery space on Langstane Place.
I offered my support with a few images, here are some of them.

Time to think about NEOS...

On SEPTEMBER 11th-19th 2010 - I will be taking part in the NEOS exhibition with Deeside Camera Club again. This year the exhibition will be in the beautiful setting of Finzean Church Hall and I will be showing some creative portraiture - but keeping them under my hat until we hang them! I'm also charged with organising the preview event - should be fun.
North East Open Studios is (to pinch from the website) "a collection of artists, makers and galleries who open their doors" in a huge event in September each year.....and here's the exciting bit....

I'm very excited about being asked to photograph the NEOS event this year in Aberdeenshire. I'm going to get to as many studios/exhibitors in the county as possible to catch as much of the action as I can. North East Scotland has an inspiring and very welcoming creative community and I'm looking forward to catching up with lots of artists and the thousands of visitors expected through their open doors. There's also a great deal from Suzanne Edge Photo coming for anyone who is opening their doors for NEOS this September, both in the city and county....but that's just a tease for now....

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Emma Pattullo at Platform 22 in Torphins for her recent help and enthusiasm, and large amounts of coffee! Being able to sit outside in the summer sun has been a long time coming. Emma and David had been busy with an overhaul of the gallery and cafe in Torphins but still had time for a gossip and to pass on some helpful advice....cheers! Hopefully we can get together soon for a photoshoot.

Many thanks to Barbara who sent a glowing testimoninal after the studio session with the kids. It was great fun and using the home setup was relaxing for the family. The kids were great and the black and white shots of the little one look fabulous in the white acrylic fotoslot frame she picked.

We had fun on Saturday morning photographing Katherine and Gordon. There wasn't too much time, so it was a quick shoot. Thanks to them for allowing me to share the pictures.
